Foods that are killing us everyday

Foods that are killing us everyday

  • By Quality Ayurveda

Our food habits nowadays are more conscious and planned and everybody seems to be taking note of all the wrong foods eaten. It may, however, be very surprising to know that unknowingly we are consuming 5 white poisons in our everyday meal. These foods instead of providing nutrients to us put us in danger, we end up troubling our health by consuming these food items big time which are not at all good for our health and increase the risk of developing diseases like cancer, hypertension, bone health issues, and diabetes.

Pasteurized Cow Milk: Pasteurization is believed to destroy beneficial bacteria found in raw cow milk. It also kills the natural enzymes and destroys all its phosphatase, which is essential for calcium absorption. Calcium works with Vitamin D, which is very essential to the growth and health of children and also improving the immune system. One should, therefore, avoid having pasteurized cow milk as this may pose us to serious health threats.

White or Refined Rice: When rice is processed it involves removal of the outer layer and germ from it. The rice is therefore left with endosperm, only. This layer contains starch in a huge quantity, which has the potential to increase your blood sugar or glucose levels to a great extent.

Refined Sugar: Since Sugar contains a lot of calories, with fundamentally no essential nutrients & because of that it is considered as part of ‘empty’ calories. It can potentially have harmful effects on metabolism and contribute to all sorts of diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes, Overweight/Obesity, Liver diseases. Because of the harmful effects of sugar on the function of insulin, it leads to type II diabetes. It is recommended that men can have a maximum of 9 teaspoons of sugar per day and women can have a maximum of 6 teaspoons of sugar per day. Indians, however, have a very high inclination towards sugar intolerance and diabetes, it is therefore recommended not to go beyond 5 teaspoons of added sugar per day which includes sugar available in cookies, fruit juices, etc.

Refined Salt: Salt makes the human body hold on to water. When eaten too much, the extra water stored in the body increases your blood pressure. The more salt we eat, the higher our blood pressure will be. Data available with Quality Ayurveda shows that in India 1 in 3 adults are affected by high BP and the majority of them are not aware of it. Therefore, it is recommended to follow a low-salt diet. The table salt we consume usually contains iodine, which is needed for a healthy body. But the refining of salt removes iodine from the salt.

White Flour (Maida): Also popularly known as ‘White poison’, white flour has become a necessity for all of us but it impacts our health drastically. We often end up consuming it in the form of bread at our home and sometimes, in the market/food joints in form of fast foods. During the processing of Maida from wheat, the endosperm of the wheat is removed from the germ (wheat germ) and the bran (wheat bran), which is very crucial for digestion. Most of the necessary nutrients are lost during the processing of Maida, foods made from it utilize nutrients from the body for absorption.
